  • Ascorbic acid is important in carnitine synthesis (requires Fe(II))
  • Ascorbic acid is required for the synthesis of norepinephrine from dopamine
  • Ascorbic acid is required for the 7-α-hydroxylase reaction.
  • Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble antioxidant.
  • Deficiency in ascorbic acid leads to scurvy. Scurvy is characterized by sore, spongy gums, loose teeth, fragile blood vessels, swollen joints, and anemia.
  • Collagen quality will be poor in vitamin C deficiency.
