A non-tender cystic swelling, commonly on the dorsum of the wrist; this is the size of a small grape and contains clear mucinous fluid.

The cause of synovial cysts are unknown.

They may cause compression of the median nerve by narrowing the carpal tunnel, causing carpal tunnel syndrome and manifesting itself as pain and paresthesia, and clumsiness of finger movements.
