This is an infection of the synovial sheaths, like from a puncture of palm by a rusty nail.

The digit swells up and movement becomes painful.

This is usually confined to the affected digit.

If neglected, the synovial sheath may rupture and spread to the midpalmar space then through the carpal tunnel to the forearm, especially if it occurs in the little finger or the thumb.
