Dorsal Column Injury

- If injury is inferior to decussation, deficit can be ipsilateral (same side)
- If injury is superior to decussation, deficit can be contralateral (opposite side)
- Tests to determine dorsal column injury include:

  • Two point discrimination
  • Stereogenesis: the ability to identify an object with eyes closed.
  • Graphestheai: the ability to identify a number or letter drawn on the skin
  • Vibratory: tuning fork on bony surface
  • Romberg: can you stand with eyes closed
  • Kinesthesia: movement identified
  • Association: identification of object
