Paraplegia

- Is the loss of voluntary movements below the level of the lesion.
- Results from interruption of the descending pathways from the motor centers in the brain stem and higher centers.
- Blood flow through the radicular arteries (arising from the posterior intercostal arteries to supply the spinal cord) may be interfered with during aortic surgery producing ischaemia of the spinal cord resulting in paraplegia.
