Preeclampsia

- Preeclampsia is the development of high blood pressure during pregnancy.  Other signs of preeclampsia include protein in the urine and severe edema (swelling).
- The only treatment for preeclampsia is delivery of the baby, which may mean premature birth.
- Magnesium sulfate is the treatment of choice for preventing and treating eclamptic seizures, demonstrating superiority over phenytoin and diazepam in two large clinical trials.
